What is VHDL, and why is it important for hardware design?

VHDL, or VHSIC Hardware Description Language, is a powerful language used for describing the behavior and structure of electronic systems. It is crucial for hardware design as it allows engineers to model complex systems at various levels of abstraction, enabling simulation, synthesis, and verification. Using VHDL effectively can enhance design accuracy and efficiency, helping to prevent errors in the hardware development process. For example, students and professionals might use it to create a digital circuit simulation before actual hardware implementation, leading to better performance and reduced costs.

What topics are covered in "VHDL BY EXAMPLE"?

"VHDL BY EXAMPLE" covers a wide range of topics essential for understanding VHDL, including basic syntax, data types, concurrency, and design units. The book emphasizes practical examples that demonstrate how to implement hardware designs using VHDL. It's particularly useful for learners as it provides real-world applications that illustrate concepts, making the learning journey engaging and applicable. For instance, readers can follow through examples of digital circuits and FPGA programming, which solidify theoretical knowledge through practical application.

Engineering Editorial Review

The VHDL By Example book is intended for those who already have knowledge and working experience with digital design and operation. It provides a quick entry into VHDL basics and gives a crash course in the basics of FPGA design. The book is helpful for those who work on FPGA's professionally. The examples are well chosen and very useful. It is an excellent beginner's book on VHDL and is highly recommended. The book is good for engineers seeking to make a second step into the VHDL language. The author is very experienced and can add lots of tips and best practices from his field experience. Learning by examples is the best approach as it covers all that is needed to start writing VHDL. However, the book expects readers to be well-versed in digital logic design and doesn't teach everything. The glossary is short and not very useful as a reference.
