The Reaping (Paperbacks from Hell)

** The Reaping (Paperbacks from Hell)** The Reaping, a vintage horror novel penned by Bernard Taylor in 1980, has sparked diverse responses among readers, primarily resonating with fans of classic 70’s and 80’s horror. This reissue, curated by Valancourt Books, invites readers into a slow-burning narrative that intensifies with an undercurrent of dread and unexpected eroticism. Readers are divided on the pacing of the story. Some appreciate the gradual buildup, which creates an atmosphere of unease as protagonist Rigby navigates a creepy mansion filled with strange interactions, notably with the character Miss Stewart. These uncomfortable exchanges effectively Construct suspense, culminating in a surprising revelation that many found satisfying and fair—a hallmark of good storytelling. However, not all feedback is positive. Some readers find themselves struggling to empathize with Rigby, labeling him as a disagreeable character due to his elitist traits and lack of depth. This reluctance to care for the protagonist detracts from the emotional investment in the narrative, particularly when his more sensational backstory regarding personal tragedy is revealed. Additionally, while the buildup might be appreciated by some, others felt that the lengthy exposition overshadowed the story's action, leading to a rushed conclusion that didn't resonate as well. Overall, while The Reaping may not be for everyone, it successfully caters to those who enjoy a slow-burning tale filled with atmospheric tension reminiscent of past decades. For readers willing to invest in a slow progression for a well-crafted payoff, this novel could prove to be a nostalgic delight. **
